ABOUT
I work with a full gamut of traditional and contemporary design tools. Sometimes I lean heavily in the direction of design by engineering through graphics software and woodworking tools, and other times I work with a simple ballpoint pen and paper. Overall, my work is a fusion of different kinds of materials, a variety of tools and a process focused on finesse.
Chomsky once described the creative process as “the joy of discovery” as it relates to science. I adapt this idea through art and design. Ultimately it is the joy of discovery which echoes through each new project.
Currently, I build:
DEXTERITY
My favorite activities and designs are rooted in dexterity. Drawing, drumming, plucking strings, trimming, cutting, carving, polishing, typing, competitive gameplay... all of these activities are powered by ten-fingers of articulating muscle, tendon, blood and bone; all working in tandem, sympathetically with the imagination. Dexterity is my keystone. It is the harmony between one design and the next; through different forms and functions; both subject and object; my design system and aesthetic.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
I build musical instruments from scratch. It is a extremely meticulous process but finesse demands a high degree of detail and patience. Once finished, each of my instruments is a solid, fully functional and one-of-a-kind original.
COMPETITIVE/STRATEGY GAMES
I learned to play chess and Rumi when I was 5 years old, and I design games because I love playing them. I’m also a fan of chess board collecting and board game craftsmanship. I build tabletop dexterity games designed for entertainment and all ages.
ART/DESIGN CLASSES
In addition to design, I teach at nonprofit organizations:
- Minddrive
- Interlochen Center for the Arts
- Kansas City Public Library
My classes involve studies of fine art, animation, film, digital media and technical design. I teach teens and adults, and also run special community classes for activities like bocce gameplay and drumming fundamentals.
Solid design is more than the sum of its parts.
